Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli (Find it in our catalog)
Reviewed by Meghan M., Library Volunteer
A few years ago, I discovered Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and fell in love with the story. Since then, I've read it many times over, becoming more attached to the characters and the message. The story focuses in on Leo, a student at Mica High School in Arizona. The underlying tone at Mica High is conformity, with nobody willing to or interested in stepping outside the lines and distinguishing themselves as an individual. The status quo is challenged when Susan Caraway, who goes by the name of Stargirl, arrives after the summer break. She seems to be oblivious to the thoughts and judgments of others, and is unapologetically herself. She wears unusual outfits, sings in the middle of lunch, and cheers for both teams at every sporting event. Nobody, including Leo, knows what to make of her, but what he doesn't know is that Stargirl is about to change his life.
I would recommend this story to readers of all ages, specifically those between the ages of 13-16 who may be able to relate to it the most. Anyone who has previously read and enjoyed books by Jerry Spinelli would like this novel as well. Its positive message of nonconformity and celebrating who you are is one that will leave readers inspired.
